For the second year in a row, Shorecrest is participating in the North Fork Hen House Tour. Cornell University has organized a self-guided tour of several North Fork hen houses for Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The purpose of the tour is to raise awareness of backyard poultry, to celebrate hometown hen houses, and to share enthusiasm for raising chickens, ducks, and poultry
The tour will be self-guided; visitors will be given a map with directions to each of the locations and then they can pick and choose which places that they want to visit.
Participants will pick up their maps at Cornell University’s Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center at 3059 Sound Ave., Riverhead, NY 11901. Participants from the East End may pick up their maps at 1700 North Parish Dr., Southold, NY 11971. There will be a $10 fee per vehicle to obtain a map; this fee will help to pay for the printing of maps and advertising costs. If you have any questions, please call 631-727-3595 or email email@example.com. Also see www.LongIslandHort.cornell.edu
Shorecrest adopted their rooster Elvis and his harem of Silver Leghorn hens complete with coop from a friend 2 years ago. The next generation of hens, a mix of different varieties which include the colored- egg-laying Aurucanas, were added as chicks the following Spring and are now one year old and laying profusely.
So make sure to stop by Shorecrest on the tour and meet Marilyns friendly feathered friends!
