North Fork Escape: Candlelight Tour, Folk Art, & Christmas at the Show House

If ‘Black Friday’ at the mall is not your idea of post-Thanksgiving fun, come to the North Fork this weekend; we’re the antidote to the alienating experience of mass shopping at big box stores.

On Friday you can rebel against crass commercialism by joining in a free, decades-old local tradition, the Southold Historical Society’s Candlelight Tour and Tree Lighting.  And all weekend, people who would rather give unique, hand crafted gifts made locally instead of whatever bits of plastic have been shipped from China to fill big box store shelves have several special shopping opportunities.

For example, all weekend you can shop the 23rd Annual Country Parlor Holiday Folk Art & Gift Show at the Hallockville Museum Farm for the best handcrafted gifts on the East End. Or enjoy a spectacular designer show house and ‘Best of the North Fork’ emporium set in a transformed 1835 manse, otherwise known as ‘Christmas at the Show House’.

While these rare events headline the weekend’s happenings, they’re not the only things going on. For a full list, check out GoNorthFork.org on Wednesday afternoon to see the latest just as it’s published, or better still visit the site now and sign up for the free newsletter; that way you’ll be in the know just by checking your email.

Best of all, you can enjoy your stay at a discount. Visitors who wish to be properly pampered can take advantage of a Shorecrest special deal, while families wishing to bring the kids, or the dog, or people otherwise seeking a house instead of a B&B can scoop up a vacation rental at a special rate. Check out all the special discounts here.

The Candlelight Tour

Every year, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the Southold Historical Society welcomes the public to a candlelit tour of the many historic buildings in its Maple Lane complex. At each location hosts in period dress welcome you and can explain the local history in as much detail as you wish.

The tour highlights  include Santa and his elves in old Pine Neck Barn and a blacksmith crafting nails and tools in the Blacksmith Shop. Crafty visitors can learn about traditional holiday arts including embroidery, rug hooking and knitting by watching demonstrations in the Ann Currie-Bell House. Kids who hang out by the old-fashioned cast iron stove in the Bay View Schoolhouse can make ornaments for the school tree.  Period music beckons from the cozy Thomas Moore House, providing a perfect background for exploring the beautiful, traditional decorations there.

Speaking of music, musicians in period costume wander the grounds, entertaining the crowd as it visits the many buildings, which also include a print shop, corn crib, icehouse and more.

No mall schlock here; these centuries’ old houses and workplaces are carefully and beautifully decorated, with no two alike. The tour is free, and runs from 3-6 pm. The tree lighting, including carols, is at 5 pm.

The 23rd Annual Country Parlor Holiday Folk Art & Gift Show

Set in Hallockville Museum Farm’s historic Naugles Barn, this event is the East End’s most unique fine folk art and craft show. It runs all day Friday and Saturday, and much of Sunday. The handmade crafts and gifts include tree trimmings, baskets, rugs, Santas, vintage and rustic home decor and gifts. And the organizers really do mean “hand made”: hand stitched, hand carved, hand hooked, hand woven and hand crafted! It’s hard to imagine a more powerful pushback against the Black Friday mass-produced plastic Christmas shopping experience than this deeply traditional shopping opportunity.

Christmas at the Show House

A group of local designers has transformed the historic albeit staid Cutchogue Presbyterian 1835 manse into a beautiful showcase of holiday design and an emporium of local art, crafts, furnishings and goods. While there’s a small admission fee to the house—which goes to local charities—the experience of wandering the rooms and halls more than justifies having to buy a charity-supporting ticket.

What’s more, you’ll surely find a perfect gift or two (or dozen) from one of the many vendors. Check out the Facebook page or website for all the details. While this terrific event is open all weekend, unlike the events above, it will return for the two weekends thereafter. So come this weekend, and if you can’t get to the show house, come back again the following weekend and do it then.

For a great deal on Restaurant week on the North Fork this spring, stay with us at Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast. The dates are from April 27- May 4th, and if you have ever participated in restaurant week, you know it’s a great way to try out new places or get the best value from the restaurants you already love. And to make the week an even better value, I am offering to pick up the tab on the prix fixe price at a couple of my local favorites when you book two nights. In addition you will receive  the NFBBA discount card which gives you discounts at local wineries and merchants, as well as local restaurants, boutiques and for spa services.

So far this year, the restaurants that are participating are: A Lure Chowder House & Oysteria  in Southold; aMano Osteria and Bar in Mattituck, Jamesport Manor Inn* and Jedediah Hawkins Inn* in Jamesport; Noah’s*  in Greenport; North Fork Table & Inn* in Southold; and   Touch of Venice in Cutchogue. All of these are great places to eat and will be offering a $27.95p.p. 3-Course prix fixe menu for the 8 day week. You can make an online reservation through open table http://www.opentable.com at the restaurants marked *.

For more information on the week go to the Long Island Restaurant Week website https://www.longislandrestaurantweek.com . Put in East End in the find a restaurant section to see if any new places have been added at the last minute.

So, if you have been picking up on the North Fork Wine Country buzz and have wanted to check it out, but didn’t want to make the financial commitment, this is a great way to explore. A word of warning: you might get hooked! Here are a few pictures of A Lure, one of our favorites just a quick 2.4 mile, four minute drive from Shorecrest.

And here is the breath taking view of the marina the restaurant overlooks. Don’t you wish you were here?

Visit the Hamptons Film Festival, Pick Pumpkins!

The Hamptons Film Festival

The Hamptons Film Festival

A visit to The International Hamptons Film Festival is a treat for movie lovers, not only for the quality of the films, but for its location in the beautiful East End of Long Island at a time of year that to many is the prettiest. The milling crowds of summer visitors have have thinned but the pristine beaches, bucolic countryside, 5 star restaurants, farm stands and vineyards are all still open for business. The festival co-incides with the beginning of fall foliage season and the weather is at it’s most pleasant; you can usually depend on sunny dry days and cool nights.

Hamptons Film Festival

This fall season the Festival will show 13 films in five days opening Thursday October 10th with ‘Kill Your Darlings’ starring Daniel Radcliffe and Michael C Hall. The movie has been described as possessing  “a loose, heady energy that echoes a Beat poem …The director, John Krokidas’ impressive feature film debut tracks the meeting of Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs during Ginsberg’s early days at Columbia University.”

To view the full Film Festival program and purchase tickets visit the Hamptons Film Festival website.  In planning your itinerary why not consider taking in more that the East End of Long Island has to offer and include a stay with us at the Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast or at one of our luxury North Fork rental properties.

Sunset at the Shorecrest BnB beach in Southold

From pumpkins to sunsets on the North Fork

The Hamptons Film festival coincides with Harvest in the wine and farm country of the North Fork where Shorecrest is located.  A stay in our lovingly maintained 1860’s Inn offers private beaches for walks and sunset views, gourmet breakfast and concierge services to help you plan your visit. Located just 5 minutes drive from Greenport village ferry which will transport visitors and their cars to Shelter Island and from there via the South Ferry to the Hamptons, you can combine your movie watching with a taste of the North Fork and take the opportunity to get to know the area better.

Recent guests at one of our secluded beach front rentals told me they spotted 5 shooting stars during their three night stay, a common occurrence when the skies are as dark as they are renowned for out here. Something different and unique for you to look forward to when you return from a night at the cinema!

During your visit be sure to pick up some organic local produce, eggs, corn, goat cheese and wine, and don’t forget the apples and pumpkins.

For more information on the Hamptons Film festival as well as great restaurants, farm stands, vineyards, harvest, pumpkin picking and other things to do visit our Events page for a calendar of East End activities and The Area page on our website for an interactive map of local North Fork attractions.

We hope you enjoy a wonderful time at the Hamptons Film Festival and look forward to welcoming to Southold and the Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast soon!
