Shellabration & Holiday House Tour

This weekend, visitors to the North Fork can party and feast at Shellabration in Greenport, take a spectacular holiday house tour, shop hand crafted gifts or simply enjoy a heavenly light show–the Geminid meteor shower. And those are just a few of the options…

Best of all, you can be pampered while you visit if you stay with us at the Shorecrest Bed & Breakfast. Check out our specials.

Saturday and Sunday from noon to four, the restaurants of Greenport have teamed up to delight you with culinary creations crafted from the bounty of the Peconic Bay–oysters, scallops, clams–paired with the best of our vineyards. For example, First and South is matched with Bedell, while the Frisky Oyster cavorts with Sparkling Pointe; 14 delicious pairings in all. Take the restaurant walk, sample and sip to your heart’s content.

Saturday at 5, join Greenport as it lights its Christmas tree in Mitchell Park; enjoy carols, cocoa and more. Shop late; the stores will be open past 6, so you can keep meandering and have many delightful opportunities to duck out of the nighttime cold. History buffs are in for a treat on Sunday, as the Little Red Schoolhouse on Front Street will be open during the restaurant walk–noon to four–displaying local artifacts, while hosts share tales of Greenport then and now, and the authors of Greenport in Postcards sign books. Full details here.

The Cutchogue Holiday House Tour and Tree Lighting

Want a more Christmas-themed festivity? Saturday offers something really special: The Cutchogue Holiday House Tour and Tree Lighting. As puts it:

“Four beautifully decorated homes welcome guests to enjoy wine tasting, appetizers /desserts provided by a vineyard and a restaurant. AlAlso visit two historical houses and take a farm tour; enjoy local merchants offering specials on the day.  Homes include Sannino Vineyard Bed and Breakfast, The Farmhouse Bed and Breakfast, the private home of designer Connie Cross, and Shades of Gray Cottage.

Additional stops are Santa’s Christmas Tree Farm, the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Society, 8 Hands farm and the Designer Showcase House & Emporium. End at Cutchogue Village Green with Christmas carols, lighting of the Christmas tree and refreshments. 11 am – 4 pm. Note, tickets are necessary; details here.

While you’re in Cutchogue, another must do is the Holiday Open House at the  Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild. Shop original art by local artists and handcrafted gifts; enjoy refreshments. Details.

Christmas at Hallockville

Sunday step back in time and enjoy old-fashioned Christmas fun at the Hallockville Museum Farm. Hallockville explains: “Celebrate the season the old-fashioned way with guided tours of historic homes decorated for the season, holiday music and special exhibits, children’s activities and event a special guest from the North Pole!

The Hallock Homestead will be decorated in the style of a Victorian Christmas, complete with antique toy displays, mince meat tarts baking in the wood stove and costumed interpreters. The Cichanowicz Farmhouse will depict a Depression-era Polish farming family’s Christmas traditions. Plus craft demonstrations, holiday shopping, homemade baked goods and more!” 12-3:30 pm. Details here.

Santa in Southold

Are you visiting with your kids? If so, Saturday you can find Santa at the Southold Historical Society’s Holiday Fair. Shop for gifts and cards from vendors carefully screened to ensure only the best hand-made items would be for sale. The Railroad Museum of Long Island shows off an elaborate model train display; kids can get their faces painted, do crafts, and receive a small gift from Santa, plus a free photo with him. Enjoy a bake sale and cafe, participate in a raffle with prizes donated from local merchants, farmers, and local artists. Details here.

While much more is happening this weekend–full listings at–visitors escaping the bright lights of the big city have one more very special treat in store: The Geminids. As Southold’s Custer Observatory explains: “the “Geminids is the king of the meteor showers. It is considered by many to be the best shower in the heavens, producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak.” Here where the skies are dark, you can really see the show. (Clouds permitting of course.) Learn more here.

Visit the East End for Great Food, Live Music & More, May 3rd and 4th

Restaurant Week, Live Music

Great Food, Live Music & More, May 3rd and 4th

So much is happening this weekend!

For fine dining at a discount, enjoy Restaurant Week’s final days. For a listing of participants and my special offer, check out my previous post.

Beyond inexpensive fine dining, there’s a wide range of live music, art openings, and food, farm & vineyard treats happening up and down the North Fork on the East End of Long Island. Full listings follow the summary.

If you’re a foodie or just want to get closer to the land, tour an organic farm, sample food and chat with the farmer.  Or play winemaker for a day. Or perhaps you’d rather craft your own vinegar and vinaigrette with locally grown ingredients.

If live music is what moves you, you’ve plenty of choices. On Saturday afternoon, several vineyards are showcasing musicians. Unfortunately, a lot of the shows happen at the same time, so you can’t do them all. On Sunday a couple of vineyards offer more live music, plus there’s a special, non-vineyard concert.

If you’d rather spend your time in galleries, gazing at beauty, this weekend features two art openings. One features modernist paintings and one urban photography. In addition there’s a fun ongoing exhibit.

And if you’re coming from New York City (or any other urban area) you know that one of the nicest features of the East End is that it gets properly dark at night, making stargazing fun. So on Saturday, from dark to midnight, you can visit the Custer Institute observatory in Southold for a guided tours of the heavens, clouds permitting. Details.

Kontokosta Winery opens near Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast

Kontokosta near Shorecrest 1It seems that lately there is always something new and fun happening on the North Fork of Long Island, but I am particularly thrilled when it happens near Shorecrest B&B and is so convenient for my guests to enjoy. The particular something I am talking about is Kontokosta Winery,  a new vineyard and winery that opened just down the road and is one of the first to open on the Sound. It’s only 2.8 miles away or a quick four minute drive from Shorecrest.

I was enchanted the minute I turned off the North road and drove up the long driveway that cuts through the center of the vineyard. It reminded me of the approach to an ancient French chateaux. The exterior was reminiscent of an east end barn, with inviting large red entry doors and is the work of architects Tom Samuels and Nancy Steelman, the husband-and-wife team behind Samuels & Steelman Architects, who managed to get a  rural barn feel from the outside and create a Soho urban loft vibe on the inside. The building is perched in a unique position, high on the cliffs with the large glass windows overlooking the Long Island Sound to the north and the vineyard to the south.

What impressed me most when entering the winery was the long farmhouse style tables, they were completely covered with copper which gave them a distinctly modern twist. The place had a comfortable, yet industrial feel. The main tasting bar was a polished slate. A slate patio facing the sound enables you to take in the breath taking view while enjoying wine alfresco or if you prefer, there’s exterior seating with vineyard views on the other side of the building.  A large second floor open loft area has seating and even more amazing views, but is open only to wine club members who can reserve the area for private parties or tastings. Since it was a slow day and the area was empty, our host allowed us to go up and take a look around. I couldn’t help but imagine how much fun could be had by Shorecrest guests who booked a stay and scheduled a party in this room! I think I might do it myself! My friends and I were enjoying ourselves so much we lingered past closing time, but instead of being shooed away, our host started playing Gershwin tunes on the piano. It was the perfect ending to a terrific afternoon.

Although the winery is new and wines are relatively young, the reds were delicious with a full body and depth. It is also a member of L.I. Sustainable Wines touting a green building, wind energy, xeriscaping and an organic community garden that supports local non-profits.  Their website doesn’t have much on it, but their Facebook page is kept current with lots of interesting information and events. –Can’t wait to hear what my guests have to say about this interesting new winery.

A few months later on Feb. 23, I attended a benefit for the talented and loved chef Gerry Hayden, from North Fork Table and Inn who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, hosted by Knotokosta and Slow Food East End. Great food was provided by chefs from all over the east end at the sold out event and it was quite inspiring to see so many of Gerry and his wife Claudia’s peers and colleagues in the restaurant world come together for him.

Our Slogan Contest

I needed an 8-12 word slogan for my new brochure, but was stumped: how could I condense the essence of Shorecrest into something so short? Then I had the brilliant idea (though I say it myself) to make it a competition for my former guests. I received far more entries than I expected and they were all so good! I also learned a lot about what it is that makes Shorecrest so special to each of them, which was touching and gratifying.

In the end, the 12 word limit meant it was not possible to include everything about Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast that guests have enjoyed, so the ‘judge’ (who knows me and my BnB very well) selected the one that encompassed the ‘experience’ and ‘feeling’ of this place.

And the Slogan Contest Winner is…

We did a little tweaking, but the winner by a nose is:

Oceanfront Elegance meets Old World Charm in the Heart of Wine Country – (mostly) by Kara Joy

Kara also included a photograph, which I had said would be extra points!

Unfortunately we couldn’t fit in anything about the food, which so many wrote about, and which is very important part of the pleasure of a stay here. But the slogan has all the other key aspects of staying here. “Elegance meets Old World Charm” captures the unique experience of enjoying this historic house full of old but beautiful things, collected over a lifetime; the comfort and tranquility of the high ceilinged and always peaceful rooms; and books, games and a cozy fire in the winter. The spirit of the phrase also includes my favorite part of this place, our semi-formal gardens. “Waterfront” encapsulates our wonderful location. We’re surrounded by water, with our own private beach on the Long Island Sound in front, and another on the inlet behind the house. And by including “in the heart of Wine Country” Kara signals one of the great reasons to come here, to explore the North Fork’s many vineyards and their special events.

Slogan Contest Runners Up…

Although Kara’s entry gets the big prize, there were some close runners up; picking hers to win was hard. A full list of entries is at the end of this post, and you’ll see, they are full of lovely, heart-warming sentiments. Thank you! Nonetheless I committed to awarding three runners up $50 off a one night stay, $100 off of two nights, can be used any time, so choices had to be made.

These all tie for second:

A wine country getaway that feeds your heart & senses, by Beth de Marte
A relaxing North Fork country escape served with comfort & elegance, by Christine & Joe Frevola

Relaxation and elegance in the heart of Long Island Wine Country by Jon McGinn.

Still, all the entries were so good– what great reviews they would make (hint)—that I’ve decided to expand the prizes. Everyone else who entered (even those of you who wrote way over 12 words maximum) can also get $50 off a one night stay, $100 off of two nights, but unlike the second prize winners, to claim yours you must use it by mid-April for a weekend stay or the end of June for a mid-week stay.

Oysters Shellabration

This weekend is the East End’s annual Shellabration of all the Peconic Bay’s delicious bounty–scallops, oysters, and clams. Fourteen restaurants will offer $5 tapas-sized plates of shellfish treats, paired with local wines for $3. While all of the restaurants are top notch, of special note are Noah’s, which was the only North Fork restaurant to make Newsday’s 2013 list of top seafood restaurants on Long Island, and First and South, which will cap off Shellabration Saturday with a late night Prohibition Party in honor of the 80th anniversary of alcohol’s legalization. All of the food and wine specials are on offer Saturday and Sunday from noon to five. A list of restaurants and their matching vineyards is here.  In addition, local merchants will stay open late. You can sample mulled wine, cookies and gifts as you stroll the vilage shops. Details here.

Support the continuing restoration of Peconic Bay by buying a wristband. ($15/one, discounts for multiple bands.)  Profits go to the Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT) and the Greenport Rotary Club. Your wristband entitles you to a free glass of Greenport Harbor Ale, and a SPAT sponsored raw bar tasting of Peconic Bay Scallops, Clams and Oysters.

Shorecrest Shellabration

Shorecrest is conveniently located on the cusp of Greenport Village, just five minutes from the festivities downtown. And yet we’re just far enough away that the revelry cannot pierce our peaceful, quiet comforts. In honor of this terrific festival, I will give you two free wristbands–for the raw bar and ale–if you stay with me at Shorecrest two nights, or stay three nights at any of our rental houses.
