Shellabration!

Oysters Shellabration

This weekend is the East End’s annual Shellabration of all the Peconic Bay’s delicious bounty–scallops, oysters, and clams. Fourteen restaurants will offer $5 tapas-sized plates of shellfish treats, paired with local wines for $3. While all of the restaurants are top notch, of special note are Noah’s, which was the only North Fork restaurant to make Newsday’s 2013 list of top seafood restaurants on Long Island, and First and South, which will cap off Shellabration Saturday with a late night Prohibition Party in honor of the 80th anniversary of alcohol’s legalization. All of the food and wine specials are on offer Saturday and Sunday from noon to five. A list of restaurants and their matching vineyards is here.  In addition, local merchants will stay open late. You can sample mulled wine, cookies and gifts as you stroll the vilage shops. Details here.

Support the continuing restoration of Peconic Bay by buying a wristband. ($15/one, discounts for multiple bands.)  Profits go to the Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT) and the Greenport Rotary Club. Your wristband entitles you to a free glass of Greenport Harbor Ale, and a SPAT sponsored raw bar tasting of Peconic Bay Scallops, Clams and Oysters.

Shorecrest Shellabration

Shorecrest is conveniently located on the cusp of Greenport Village, just five minutes from the festivities downtown. And yet we’re just far enough away that the revelry cannot pierce our peaceful, quiet comforts. In honor of this terrific festival, I will give you two free wristbands–for the raw bar and ale–if you stay with me at Shorecrest two nights, or stay three nights at any of our rental houses.

Long Island Restaurant Week-Another Way to Taste the North Fork

Long Island Restaurant Week

This week is Long Island Restaurant Week, and some terrific East End restaurants are participating. Each is offering a special three course $27.95 prix fixe.

For fresh seafood creations, check out Southold’s A Lure. There you could try (as one option among seven different entrees) “Macadamia-Coconut Crusted Flounder/Key Lime Beurre Blanc/Sweet Potato Puree/Tiny French Beans.”

If you’d prefer Italian specialties, reserve at Mattituck’s aMano. Enjoy “Chicken Milanese/Arugula Salad/Heirloom Tomatoes” or any of the other eight entree options. Or you could head to Cutchogue’s Touch of Venice.

Going to Greenport, to check out all its shops and sights? Go to Noah’s for dinner. He’s offering a three course tasting menu with suggested wine pairings for every dish.

Many South Fork restaurants are participating too; the closest to Shorecrest is Sag Harbor’s Bell & Anchor. Its seafood prix fixe menu is here.

For the full list of participating East End restaurants, check out the home page of Long Island Restaurant Week.

To really take advantage of everything delicious, you need to stay with me at Shorecrest. I’m conveniently close to all, and yet quietly across from the vast, serene shoreline (that’s our view). You’ll be able to relax and digest in peace. The calm will be even more important if you’re here this weekend, as restaurant week merges into the Taste of the North Fork festivities. See my other blog posts for details.

Taste the North Fork-Wineries!

IMG_0742

One way to Taste the North Fork this Veteran’s Day Weekend is hop on and off the free shuttle bus as it stops at twenty different wineries all along the North Fork. Each is offering something special, whether a discount, a featured vintage, or live music. Here are just a few examples:

On Saturday, Waters Crest Winery (one of my favorites, since winemaker Jim Waters is so kind to my guests) is offering a wine blending class from 2 to 3 pm. On Sunday Jim will host cooking with Tom Schaudel, which includes a food demonstration and tasting that includes a signed copy of Tom’s book, ‘Playing with Fire’. On Monday he’ll give you a personal winemaker’s tour, which is a 45 minute session plus a taste of 4 Waters Crest Wines.

If you like vintage art, Sparkling Pointe Vineyard is offering a special collection of antique French posters, complimented by special tastings from its library of vintages. Bedell Cellars will have live music and special tastings. Sannino Bella Vita will be saluting our veterans by offering a 15% discount to members of the military, and everybody can get a red, white, or pink flight for just $5. The full list of participating wineries and the shuttle stops is here.

Shorecrest Welcome Picnic

One of the loveliest, easiest ways to enjoy all that our wineries have on offer this festival weekend is to stay at Shorecrest. Here you’ll find calm, quiet beauty, a delicious breakfast, and all the inside skinny I can offer on the happenings throughout the weekend. You’ll find Shorecrest an oasis adjacent to, but blissfully apart from, all the hullabaloo. Of course I’m joining in the spirit of the weekend–stay here and I’ll give you a certificate for a tasting at Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard and a free bottle of their delicious wine.

Taste the North Fork-Love Lane!

IMG_0122

Come Taste the North Fork by taking a simple stroll up and down Love Lane, a few blocks packed with unique shops right in the heart of Mattituck, and enjoying the special farmer’s market and merchant events. The Love Lane community will be honoring our veterans by donating a portion the weekend’s revenues to a locally founded veteran’s organization.

The farmer’s market, which runs Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, involves a huge range of locally grown and crafted products. For example, Browders Birds will be offering certified organic eggs, spice rubs, lambs wool, honey, and T-shirts. Race Rock Oysters will be presenting smoked blue fish and fresh oysters. Coffee aficionados should check out the offerings of Long Island Coffee Roasters. Invincible Summer Farms will be offering farm made goods, rare heirloom vegetables, and more. 8 Hands Farm will showcase wool and hand crafted bone jewelry. And these are just some of the participants in the farmers market!

Love Lane merchants will be contributing to the fun in many ways from 11 am to 6 pm. You can dance down the street to the music of the Long Island Banjo Society, who will perform from 11 am to 2 pm, courtesy of Love Lane independent bookstore Bookhampton. Or unwind with a relaxing 15 minute chair massage by the Blue Sage Day Spa. And when you get hungry, you’ll be able to sample local produce cooked into lots of treats. For example, the Village Cheese Shop will feature Paninis made with local apples and honey. Love Lane Kitchen will offer butternut squash soup made with the organic produce of Mar-Gene Farms. Love Lane Market will be adding local ingredients to its wood-fired pizzas. Wash these delicious meals done with a glass of wine, a pint of beer, or a bottle of cider, brought to you by Roanoke Vineyards. Looking for a delicious treat to take home as a useful souvenir? The Love Lane Sweet Shoppe will feature the locally crafted Really Good Jams.

And these merchants aren’t the only ones participating. You’ll have to take the Love Lane stroll to check them all out.and when you’re done, if you want to check out other venues, hop on the free shuttle; it stops right at Love Lane.

Taste the North Fork-Greenport!

Taste the North Fork in Greenport, dockside

Beautiful Greenport Village, located just a couple miles away from Shorecrest, offers many ways to Taste the North Fork. Indeed you could while away the entire weekend there (though you’d be missing so much in the other hamlets too). You could start by sampling some Long Island Vodka at Claudio’s, the oldest, same-family run restaurant in the United States.  And then you can wander a few blocks and have a terrific dinner. For example, Noah’s, right on historic Front Street, is offering a marvelous prix fixe dinner (or lunch), with or without wine pairings. Or for a “freshly farmed dinner,” head one block off the main drag to First and South. Or check out the dynamic offerings at The Square (especially since Chef Keith Luce invites you to taste free appetizers). And that’s just Friday!

On Saturday, the special ways to Taste the North Fork expand far beyond food and drink. Head to Clarke’s Garden to learn how to heal with natural products grown, harvested, and made on Shelter Island by Holly Cronin. Or join the Siren’s Song Gallery and the Oysterponds Historical Society for the totally unique, kid friendly, Dyed in the Wool event. Or hunt like a scavanger, Greenport style. Choose between the less traditional “Greenporches”, which will lead you pass through 6 beautiful Greenport Village settings, hosted in part by local agricultural and maritime viniculture producers. Snacks and beverages at each porch. Or go for the more traditional scramble by heading for the 1 pm starting line in Mitchell Park. If local history is more your speed, check out Greenport’s whaling past with a special exhibit at the Stirling Historical Society. If you’d like to listen to live music, one of your choices is Prentiss McNeil at Front Street Station.

And these Saturday listings aren’t even half of what Greenport has on offer that day, and doesn’t even begin to touch what’s going on Sunday. Full listings here.
