Greenport Holiday Festival on Long Island’s North Fork

The holiday season in the historic maritime village of Greenport, just 5 minutes drive from Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast in Southold began Saturday, November 27th with the arrival of Santa and the lighting of the holiday tree in Mitchell Park. Every weekend through to the New Year events are scheduled in the village for children and adults, including the opportunity for shopping, great dining (such as Noah’s and The Frisky Oyster) plus concerts, house tours, films, and much more for your entertainment.

The season culminates with a bang – literally – on New Year’s Eve with a party and celebration at the carousel in Mitchell Park, the traditional raising of the anchor, and spectacular fireworks over Greenport Harbor. For a complete list of events you can visit the Greenport Holiday Festival website and for photographs and more pictures, the Suffolk Times on line newspaper has a comprehensive spread on Greenport and the festival activities this week. Fireworks over the Harbor in Greenport

Visitors to Greenport and the North Fork discover a treasure trove of delights for all appetites; gifts for everyone on your list; decorations and gift wraps; antique stores and museum shops. All the villages along the length of Rout 25, one of the two east to west roads from Riverhead to Orient Point offer their own unique holiday festivities.

Each year the Southold Historical Society hosts a candlelight tour of the Historic District in December to coincide with the North Fork Bed and Breakfast Associations Holiday House Tour; also in Southold is the Custer Institute Observatory, which is open every Saturday evening for star gazing or catching the latest meteor shower. Southold is famous for its dark skies and lack of light pollution and star gazing is a favorite of Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast or rental house guests from our beach on the Long Island Sound.

Speaking of things to do on the North Fork during the holidays and winter, we cannot forget to mention the wineries and vineyards. Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast is making its own wine this year with Lisa and Anthony Sannino of Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard on Peconic Lane in Cutchogue, the only custom wine making facility on the North Fork of Long Island. We are just printing up our first label and hope to have some bottles ready to serve and gift in time for Christmas this year. Shorecrest and the other members of the North Fork Bed and Breakfast Association (NFBBA) also offer to our guests an exclusive winery discount card, with special offers on purchases and complimentary tastings at over 20 wineries.

So come along and enjoy the festivities during the holiday season; we are open for visitors Christmas day and the week between Christmas and New Year, and every weekend throughout the winter. We look forward to welcoming you to Shorecrest soon.

Wishing you a very happy holiday season and healthy and Successful New Year

Southport Historical Society Holiday Candlelight Tour

Christmas on the North Fork would not be complete without the Southport Historical Society’s Candlelight Tour.  This year it is scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving, on November 27th from 3-6 PM.  If you have never enjoyed the tour, then this is the year to begin.  This is noted as one of the most fun and entertaining events of the year for the Historical Society as each year a different group of local residents decorate the various areas of the Museum Complex in true Holiday style.

Each period building will be expertly decorated and arranged for visitors.  No two buildings will be decorated the same and many Holiday themed objects from the Society’s collection will appear in displays.  Tour guides will be dressed in period costumes and will guide guests along the many buildings of the Southport Historical Society.  Of course, the Christmas decorations would not be complete without Santa and his elves and rumor have it that they will be found in the Pine Neck Barn!

As guests stroll along the complex, musicians and chorus singers will be performing Holiday music which is sure to get everyone in the true spirit of the season!  The lighting of the Hamlet Christmas Tree is always an exciting part of the tour and it will happen at 5 PM in front of the Ann Currie-Bell House.  Finish the evening with a little shopping at the Treasure Exchange or the Museum Gift Shop and you will be on your way to a delightful Holiday Season!

North Fork Holiday House Tour and Food & Wine Tasting

A Holiday House Tour and Progressive Food & Wine Tasting will be presented by The North Fork Bed & Breakfast Association (NFBBA) and will spread its magic and good cheer on Saturday, December 5 from 1 PM to 5 PM, to  wine and food lovers, antique buffs, and local charities.  This year ticket holders will be able to choose either the Champagne Tour or the Merlot Tour featuring nine of the Association’s members, each of whom will welcome visitors to their seasonally decorated Bed & Breakfast homes.

Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast will be one of the five North Fork Bed and Breakfast’s who will participating in the Champagne Tour along with Aunt Dot’s, Quintessentials, Bartlett House, and Blue Iris.  Shorecrest Bed and Breakfast is  offering a special package for the weekend. With a two night booking we will reserve two tickets for you for the Champagne Tour for an inclusive price of $295 per person. If you prefer the Merlot Tour the package for two nights with two tickets will be $275 per person and you still get to enjoy the Shorecrest experience and tasting.

Ticket holders for the B&Bs on the Champagne Tour will travel from one sumptuously decorated house to the next and be treated to a fine pairing of wines and food from the finest North Fork restaurants -Legends, A Mano, Jamesport Manor Inn, Love Lane Kitchen and Frisky Oyster, and taste award-winning wines from Martha Clara, Ospreys Dominion, Old Field, Peconic Bay, and Rafael wineries.

Each of the B&Bs on the Merlot Tour (Orient Inn, Arbor View House, Harbor Knoll, and Andrews Legacy) will have pulled out all the stops in decorating their homes in Holiday Splendor and will offer refreshments and music to their visitors.

The December 5th festivity is part of the NFBBA’s commitment to growing business on the North Fork and at the same time light up holiday spirits and welcome both neighbors and tourists to enjoy some of  the delight the East End has to offer during the winter season.  It is also the season for sharing and the NFBBA will donate a percentage of the ticket sales to two charities- Community Action of Southold Town (CAST) and Maureen’s Haven.

Thanks – and enjoy your trip!
